Horn Flies
Haematobia irritans
- Most damaging biting fly infecting cattle, particular problem in the New World
- Particularly important in grazing beef cattle and feedlot cattle as can cause enormous losses
- Remain permanently on the host, feeding intermittently throughout the day
- They aggregate around the base of the horns and the back of the animal
- Eggs are laid in fresh faeces and the total lifecycle is 2 weeks
