Psoroptic mange

Psoroptes ovis

The importance of Psoroptic mange in cattle

Infestations with P. bovis are responsible for a severe and debilitating dermatitis with hair loss. The formation of pruritic scabs and altered skin function can result in economic loss. Consequently this is a disease of considerable veterinary and economic importance. Infections in young growing animals in particular can result in lower daily gains and feed energy requirements compared with other calves on the same dietary regimen. These increased energy requirements of calves can reach more than 50% of those of uninfected animals. It has been suggested that for each 10% of infested body surface, maintenance energy requirements are increased by 0.5mcal/day.
